Like most I do have my periods of dispirit, frustration and dismay and presently the abnormal happenings in my country do give reason. Although sequestered in an environment away from the vagaries of the cut and thrust of the players on the centre stage, yet my virtual participation flags constitutive desire and feelings. In addition the awareness of analogous symptoms from documented quondam occurrences further portends the tragically disastrous and calamitous outcome, proven in all cases so far.

This political party was formed and developed during the post-World War I era. It was anti-Marxist and was opposed to the democratic post-war government of the day and its treaties and agreements with other nations; and it advocated extreme nationalism as well as virulent anti-Semitism. Being one of the best speakers of the party, its leader told the other members of the party to either make him leader of the party, or, he would never return. He was aided in part by his willingness to use violence in advancing his political objectives and to recruit party members who were willing to do the same. Political acuity, deceptiveness and cunning converted the party’s non-majority but plurality status into effective governing power in the ailing Republic of 1933.Once in power, they created a mythology surrounding the rise to power, and they described the period as golden and shining progress era. The charismatic Hitler exercised supreme power courtesy the Enabling Act, promulgated earlier with which it virtually enabled him thereafter to constitutionally exercise dictatorial power without legal objection. The leader and the party made every living being on the planet suffer which for posterity will be remembered for the brutality and the destruction of human lives and dignity and the environment. Presently, most having derived the lessons, say never, never again; some however ignore and repeat the horror within their own national confines; while some accept scrumptiously and look forward to emulate and practice the recreation of the atrocities when in power.

The moot reasons enunciated by those who have their ideological leanings moored in the decadent and dangerous example set by Hitler are many. A strong leader, providing effective governance, progress oriented, placing national pride and religious-racial superiority as foremost and sacrosanct and so on. All these are very laudable and welcome and very acceptable to one and all and are amply elaborated in Mein Kampf, the biography and the political ideology of the Fuhrer. ‘Do not consider it proof just because it is written in books, for a liar who will deceive with his tongue will not hesitate to do the same with his pen’ Maimonides. A possible and probable assessment is worth examination.

We all are aware that the French Revolution stood for: Liberty, Equality, Fraternity and Human Rights. The leader’s racialism will essentially be an attempt to destroy the principles of the French Revolution in fact the laws governing human rights will recede and replaced with more draconian and harsh. Consider his opponent as his enemy and use all means to destroy them. Monitor telephones, read mails, plant informers and spread false propaganda. Glorify achievements through captive media tools, press, radio, television, literature, painting and films; suppress and ban independent views and opinions and opinion makers. Enforce censor and outlaw strikes and demonstrations. Promote crony capitalism to meet his personal needs and that of his party. In effect become a dictator in a totalitarian state

Welcome to the hodgepodge, ragbag and smorgasbord days. Are we really staring at a probable scenario? Could be! The alternative is warbled and foggy and crooked. ‘The best way to show that a stick is crooked is not to argue about it or to spend time denouncing it, but to lay a straight stick alongside it’, DL Moody. But where is the ‘straight stick’? Alas, in conglomeration of small and large political parties and their ‘giants’, I can hold none. Each stick is as crooked as the other.

Welcome to the hodgepodge, ragbag and smorgasbord days. I can only recite,

“Praised be the paper, praised be the pen, praised be the pot, praised be the ink, praised be the writer who writes the truth”, Guru Nanak Dev Ji.
