It is not difficult to get separated from your partners during Hajj and that could be an extremely excruciating experience. A middle aged lady from Rajasthan with rural background remained outside the Haram at Mecca, unattended for two days, hungry and thirsty when we chanced to meet her. She had got detached from her escort during the rounds around the Kaabah and could find no one to direct her to her hotel, inspite of the details mentioned in the card hung around her neck, no one cared to rescue her. Very briefly, few lines on the background, on Hajj and its rites.

Hajj currently is the largest annual pilgrimage in the world. The pilgrimage occurs from the 7th to 13th day of Dhu al Hijja, the 12th month of the Islamic calendar. Because the Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar, eleven days shorter than the Gregorian calendar used in the Western world, the Gregorian date of the Hajj changes from year to year.
